But, admittedly, neither were intimately familiar with the individual nature of Instagram’s gem sales. Abouzelof explains that she was initially operating as a sole proprietor before incorporating as a company to legitimize her business as it grew. But if someone wants to sell crystals on Instagram, they don’t necessarily need to incorporate a company to make purchases and sales. They can sell as an individual or sole proprietor indefinitely. Instead, Abouzelof says, they can buy inventory at gem shows or from individuals online and transactions are often made over Paypal or wire transfer, both when buying from suppliers overseas and when reselling to Instagram users. Essentially, these small-scale, social media shops are able to skirt the regulations, sanctions, and oversight that would apply to larger companies pushing higher volumes of product through traditional trade channels.
