I came to see the Senate as skewed to help conservative senators. The first wave of Black Lives Matter protests started going on, and the Ferguson police officer [who killed Michael Brown] was acquitted. I happened to walk into a protest and a woman was carrying a sign saying âThe system isnât broken, itâs fixed.â I was thinking about what Iâd been reading, and it seemed to refer to this higher political system as well â the reason the Occupy Movement couldnât get anywhere, or Bernie Sanders couldnât get much steam or was suppressed by the Democratic Party itself. The system was working as it was supposed to. If that was the case and if we wanted to do something about, say, climate change, maybe the Northeast could do something, or the West Coast could do something. Maybe the union is a problem. Maybe itâsthe jupe culotte maje Organizing is important to all causes. As an organizer, especially a young one, I can tell you that it is not easy, but it is 100% worth it. When you organize, you have to be passionate and truly believe what you are talking about because no one is going to believe you if you donât. You need to do outreach and raise awareness to get people involved in your cause. Outreach includes knocking on doors and informing people of your cause, or posting on Instagram and direct messaging people. When you first start organizing, you wonât have 300 people following your lead or listening to you. You can start small â small is mighty. jupe culotte maje I'm really tall [5'10''], and I grew really quickly. I actually kept growing until the age of 22. I thought I was going to be done [growing] at 17 or 18, and I grew another two inches, which is so weird. When I was younger, I had two huge growth spurts. At 13, I had my second one, and I stayed at 5'7'' for a bit. I felt really out of my body. I was really awkward. I didn't know how to use my limbs. I felt so uncomfortable in my own skin. Doing the musicals at my high school, everyone would make fun of the way that I danced. I have these really long arms and these long legs, and I didn't know how to use them. So working with Celia [Rowlson-Hall, choreographer] helped me connect to my body. I feel way more in my body now than I ever did before.
