At the first high school I attended, security guards made us walk through metal detectors and then they used wands on us and patted us down, all as part of the process of entering the school. Despite that, though, I regularly saw kids with knives, brass knuckles, and guns on campus. And even though I avoided joining or involving myself with any gang, I often found myself a target. People regularly associated me with one gang simply because of the grade school I went to and the friends I grew up with. And members of the opposing gang would bully me and beat me up because of it. And I knew that wasn’t the worst that could happen: If they felt like shooting me, they would. On the flip side, my friends who were part of the gang most closely affiliated with my elementary school were constantly asking me when I was going to turn out, when I was going to “come home” and join them. And the members of their gang who weren’t my friends assumed my reluctance to join meant I was working against them. Essentially, there was danger coming from every direction. I had a friend who lived a few neighborhoods over and was going through the same thing. People always walk around scared, like they could get shot at any minute because of the gangs, but I didn’t want to feed that fear. pantalon costume homme hugo boss Instead, I’m inspired to keep youth away from gangs if they ever feel alone or like their only choice is to join a gang to feel accepted. As a Native teenager, I believe it’s my mission to take care of my Native youth, no matter what tribe, as well as kids who aren't Native. I want to be an example of other ways of life that don’t involve gangs, stealing, and robbing. For me, personally, that includes my drum group (known simply in our community as a “drum,” which I started with other Native youth my age in 2014. Our drum is called Shki Bmaadzi, which is Anishinaabemowin for “new beginnings,” and it has helped me find a path that feels right. We drum, we sing, and we have fun. And when I meet other youth, I invite them to drum with us. pantalon costume homme hugo boss announcing the White House's plan to address the nation's opioid-addiction crisis.
