I think it’s really become about our relationship with our fans, because it wasn’t the subject of our music when we first started. When we started touring and seeing that people can come together no matter what age or race — you see a guy in the crowd with a turban on his head, and you see a guy in a wheelchair, and you see a lesbian couple making out, and everyone is together in the same venue. That was really inspiring to us. Coming from the suburbs of Chicago, you’re not really exposed to situations like that so often, and we were raised in a town that was predominantly white, where there wasn’t much diversity.
