Of course, it’s only about the coming of adulthood. In particular, it’s Marianne’s sexuality, and the sources of it, that form a central tension of the story. Marianne has violent sexual fantasies about wanting punishment, which she tries to act out in real life. First it’s with her boyfriend Gareth, and then a paramour in Sweden, whom she abruptly leaves when he reveals he has actual feelings, and isn’t just participating in a kink. Then it’s Connell, who is one to finally refuse her request. The source of this psychology, Rooney makes quite apparent. There’s a broken household, an abusive older brother and a mother who stands idly by, stepping in only to blame the victim. Here, too, we can see the author diving deep, and carefully constructing the inner workings of her protagonists, and not who they are in public, or on social media. spd clips MAX will release the next single off the album, “Working For The Weekend,” on August 14.
