Her impressive resume and ability to transform her YouTube channel into a multi-million dollar empire does not sound like the stereotypical Asian story. But at its core, her journey is an empowering narrative displaying that Asian women have the ability to forge their own paths toward success.PAYING IT FORWARD 331xlsl1 I always had one eye on the present, I can say that unabashedly. I was looking for a history that could explain the present â not directly or completely but at least a little bit. The history that a lot of us are taught in school or absorbed through osmosis was crafted for a very different time, before Trump, before the Iraq War and 9/11 and a history that emphasizes concession and unity and treats the Civil War as a glorious past. I was looking for parallels in the past and the roots of problems in the past. But I didnât want to hit people over the head with that. Some sections that I wrote three years ago, only in the last three months have accrued these contemporary implications that werenât there when I first wrote them, like the contested presidential elections and tipping over into violence 1800 and1876 331xlsl1 Yeah, I think I do have a fear of that. I think that the good thing is that I'm able to see the roles before I choose them, and I can smell a tokenized role from 10 feet away. It's very obvious what people are trying to do, intention-wise, like how the character is built, if she plays any meaningful role into the plot that isn't that she's just a minority friend. I still read through those roles and I've turned down some big ones, not even as an Asian-American, but as someone who is in this industry, I want my career to progress, and I don't want to die in this tornado of roles that are just "the friend." I think that it's your choice, but I think that that's also a privileged thing to say. There are a lot of actors out there that are working actors that have to take jobs, but I think the more that they see that they don't have to be tokenized, they won't be. But [I want to avoid being that person that's like] she died in the first episode, she has nothing good to say, she's always a little edgy. Come on. Really? You got to be wary of those for sure.ContentView Iframe URLTV: 331xlsl1 âUnited we stand, divided we fall,â like weâre all in this together. And thatâs never been true. The slogan is kind of a shorthand for national unity but it was coined by a guy named John Dickinson who hoped it would raise support against British taxes. When push came to shove, he refused to sign the Declaration of Independence. He was the only person who refused to sign the declaration because he thought we would fall! And eventually there was this vicious civil war. I also mention in the book Hillary Clinton saying the country was more divided than we thought; I think thatâs because politicians like her and everyone else they insist we are united, that we had a widely accepted liberalism or sense of good for the country. And obviously her defeat was shocking because it showed how deeply divided we really were. Trump had a better sense of this; he knows that weâve always been divided. 331xlsl1
