It may help them understand what they're going through as New York City teens is not necessarily normal, but that other people are [also] going through it and everyone has their own individual problems and struggles. Nowadays, you see [people] on Facebook or Instagram and think they have a perfect life, without ... pausing to get to know the person. Also, as the only black girl in the film, I think it was important for me to participate so that there was some representation for the kids of color who are growing up in mostly white environments and feel as if they're alienated or lesser than because they have different responsibilities. In high school, you have a built-in schedule, and in some ways, a built-in social life. When you get out of school, there are no guidelines or rubrics for how you're supposed to function in the real world; you don't have a schedule, and you don't have assignments or things to keep you busy. It's very easy to get lost. I did get lost. I am probably still lost most days, honestly. It's OK to be lost, but I learned that you can't just accept that and do nothing.
